College/Career Update from a NELA Graduate

From North East LA to North Carolina

From Due north E LA to Northward Carolina

by Erica Granados, Parent Education Back up Assistant

Graduating from high school is a milestone that many teens aspire to reach. Subsequently being in the education system for years, it'due south the final moment before students are confronted with adulthood. It is both a liberating yet uncertain time, especially for those who many not have a clear path ahead. Life after loftier schoolhouse presents a new set of challenges for recent graduates. Where practice I become from here? It has all led upwards to this moment but what follows? This was the case for Jacob Rivera. Leading up to his graduation in December of 2018, he began to debate where life would take him. It was not until his co-worker mentioned wanting to join the Marines that an opportunity sparked his interest. Although he had never considered joining the military prior, the conversation with his friend prompted him to take it into consideration. With no family members in the service who could provide some insight into the forces, he took it upon himself to talk to a recruiter. The recruiter he spoke to laid out the pros and cons that entail enlisting. The pros that appealed to Jacob the near were gaining a sense of discipline, fiscal responsibility, and being able to travel to different states and countries. The cons that she outlined were that it would be harder to become dwelling, it required being away for long periods of time, and recruits are to prepare aside personal convictions in club to reach a mutual goal with their peers. After speaking to the recruiter, Jacob described the following months as clockwork. He would get piece of work out with them twice a week and made efforts to become more physically and mentally prepared before being shipped out. In Apr of 2019, he finally set off for boot camp. Later many backbreaking months of training, he was officially stationed in North Carolina in Nov of 2019. He recognized Highland Park High School for giving him the skills to get through the mental challenges. While he was studying there, they had a mindfulness program they would do every morning and would have a set twenty-four hour period where they would do mindfulness yoga. In the programme they learned breathing techniques and how to put themselves in a at-home state of heed despite external stimuli. He recalls how helpful information technology was, especially during the difficult moments he experienced in training. Now you can discover Jacob on base, performing his daily job of supply work where he handles parts and ships them to unit of measurement/section in order for them to consummate their mission. He has enjoyed the challenge of growing as a person, every bit a Marine, and having the power to run across people from around the world. Although they may all have different backgrounds, they are brought together to form a close knit family formed through unison and their compatible. For those who are considering enlisting, he advises them to do their research and not make a decision based off of a recruiter, past servicemen, or anyone else simply yourself. Every branch is different and everyone's feel is different inside a given co-operative. Nevertheless, Jacob is looking forward to standing his service, managing his company that he conceptualized while he was withal at HPHS, and potentially travelling to Kingdom of norway in January of adjacent year.
